THE TRAJECTORY OF THE WORD ȚIGAN. AN ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSFORMATION OF AN (MARGINALYZING) ETHNONYM INTO A TRANS-ETHNICALLY USED SURNAME
(Abstract)
The article examines the transformation of the appellation ţigan ‘Gypsy’ from a socially marked ethnic label into an anthroponym, following the linguistic, social and administrative mechanisms that facilitated this integration. The approach, carried out from an anthroponymic and sociolinguistic perspective, is based on censuses and other historical sources and captures the stages of fixing the term as a personal name, both in Roma communities and among the majority population. The study highlights the tension between onomastic officialization and the persistence of social connotations, proposing a reflection on the relationship between name, identity and social memory.
