ON THE ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF THE ROMANIAN WORD STRĂIN ‘FOREIGN(ER)’
(Abstract)

We have endeavored to throw a light on a not wholly (as yet) clarified problem of etymology, since the Romanian word for “foreign(er)” has a history in which the prominent historic variant is by no way deductible from the widely spread extraneus (REW 3098). Our search has followed three historic variants, strein (highly presumable as etymologic), striin (early attested though obviously not etymologic) and străin (the latest attested and very slowly promoted as a main variant, despite its final setting as a standard Romanian form). By combining a thorough historical insight into the way those three variants occur in the written sources with a similarly thorough approach of their geographical diffusion, we have been able to establish the historic and dialectal status of each variant, as well as the elements for supporting the early advanced but curiously much ignored solution *exterrīnus.

Cuvinte-cheie: etimologie, variante fonetice, arii dialectale în româna veche, arii dialectale actuale.
Keywords: etymology, phonetic variants, dialectal areas in Old Romanian, dialectal areas in contemporary Romanian.
